Notes from Phyllis Porter (nee Fitzhenry)
Although one is apt to take one's upbringing for granted, thinking back, my mother achieved an
enormous amount bringing up a family of five. My father, a journalist, due to work
commitments, was not really available in the hours of the day when we needed bringing up, so
the burden fell on Mum, Helen Beatrice. She had been a dressmaker with Gran (Harriett Jane),
so we were always beautifully dressed. She was also resourceful. Whilst going through old
documents, I found out more of her capabilities, when I found the bill of sale for the land on
which our family home in Hawthorn was built. In 1918 she went to the auction of an estate and
successfully bid for the choicest block, paying 3/2/6 (pounds) per foot. Dad was amazed at her
success having only expected her to secure one of the side street blocks within their price range.
I daresay it was almost unheard of in 1918 for a woman to bid at an auction, and also for a
husband to trust his wife to do so.
