bullet  General Notes:

I've just received a notification from Genes Reunited about this lady.

I looked on your website, and I don't know whether there's a duplication but the lady who would be my wife's grandmother would have been Charlotte M. E. Hales (Charlotte May Edith), often known as Madeleine (for some reason). And from the detail given she is certainly my wife's grandmother. You also have information there about her family that my wife lacks - you've certainly worked hard compiling it.

She married an architect, Richard Withall, who was quite a bit older than she and had been serving with the Australian Army in France. They went back to Aus, living for a while in Adelaide (where his father's practise was) and then moving to Kelmscott just outside Perth (then).

It seems they eventually separated and she worked for a while on the Sydney Harbour Trust and then as a fundraiser.

They'd had a daughter, Madeleine Lisa May Withall, who eventually worked for British Forces Radio in Jakarta at the end of WW2 where she met her husband Ricardo Antonio Dionysio Anemaet then serving with the Royal Netherlands East Indies Air Force.

They returned to Holland in 1950 (taking CME with them) where my wife was born.

Cardo retired from the Dutch Air Force as a Lt Col, and ran an office furniture business with a couple of service buddies as well as doing translations (he was fluent in two or three languages).

He and his wife were divorced when my wife was about 9 (I think) and then she and her mother and grandmother came to the UK and lived in Cheltenham for a number of years.

MLM remarried to an electronics engineer working as a senior civil servant with the British Army at Arborfield, Geoffrey Fish (a Yorkshireman from Hull), and CME eventually died at her serviced bungalow near Woking. She was cremated and her ashes are interred at Woking Cemetery.

Regards,

David Rosser-Owen
