When Joseph was about twenty years of age, he was called on a mission to Switzerland, where he obtained a thorough knowledge of the German language. When he returned, he was for ten years Bishop of Gunnison, Sanpete Co. again called to Switzerland to reside over the Swiss and German missions and edit the Stern. in 1878, he was called to the Bisopric in Richfield, Sevier Co. where he was Mayor of the City.
