Richard Francis Hales ( 1840-1908) 68 years.
In the 1861 British Census aged 21, he and his brother William aged 16 had left home and were working for Samuel Thompson, a Farm Bailiff at Yelsted.
On the 21 July 1900, an article appeared in the East Kent Gazette.
"At the Sittingbourne Petty sessions, Richard Hales, a thatcher of Hartlip, was summonsed to show cause why he should not be called upon to contribute towards his father, who, since the 5th June had been chargeable to the common fund of the Milton Union.He had been requested to pay a Shilling a week, the defendant was the owner of a horse and cart. Richard said his earnings were about a eighteen shillings (0.90 Pounds) a week, and he had a sick wife, while he was a cripple. Richard's two brothers had agreed to pay a shilling, an order was made for a shilling a week plus all costs of the court. 2 3
