bullet  General Notes:

Joseph Hales (1814- at least 1877)
Was born in Hartlip, Kent, England. He was the 8th child and the 4th son of William and Frances Hales.
When he married in 1837 he was listed as a labourer in Hartlip. As was his father.
In 1844 when son William was born he was a labourer in Stockbury.
In the 1861 British Census, he was living at yelsted, with his wife, Frances Wakeling, Elizabeth Ann 23, frances 18, Caroline 14, Thomas 12, Rosa 9, Mary Ann 6, georgina 3, and Ellen 5mths.
At the time of the 1881 Census RG11/933/112/22, Joseph was living with his daughter, Ellen in Yelsted, at Stockbury, Kent.
nearby was the market town of Maidstone, and the non-tidal segment of the Medway, is just upriver. The river that severs Maidstone is probablythe most attractive feature of the town, especially upstream from the bridges, where you can stroll along the riverside walk below the stone walls of the medieval Archbishops Palace. Listed in Hales Chronicles.
